<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Since I'll be traveling in September, I've been scrambling to get ready for 2 upcoming shows. The SCVWS Annual Members show begins on September 30th at the Rose Shenson Gallery at the Triton Museum in Santa Clara. Please come to our opening reception that day from 1:00-3:00 p.m. if you're in the area.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is the painting I'm submitting for the show-there was no theme this year so anything goes! I've painted this beautiful red amaryllis 3 times and I think this one is the best of them. . Even though it's pretty loose, when I reduced it to make some note cards, it looked almost photo-real. </div>

In addition, I'm framing a number of pieces for a 4 artist show at the Institute for the Study of Western Civilization in Cupertino, CA. My paintings are a group I've titled "Italy and More." Most of them are of...you guessed it-Italy! But there are a few other subjects represented from other travel and a couple of still lifes that fit into the theme (figs and lemons, which are both pretty commonplace in Italy.) I'll give more info about this show at a later date.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I can't believe I haven't posted since May! A couple of weeks ago I went up to Pete's Harbor in Redwood City with the Paintsites group. While there were loads of boats to paint, I elected to move away from them and focus on the nearby marsh land. As usual with working en plein air, the condidtions kept changing. First it was cool and a bit overcast with lots of clouds on the horizon...so no shadows. Then the sun came out and the wind kicked up and blew away all the clouds. At least I didn't get caught short the way several of my companions did when the sailboat they had selected to paint hauled anchor and motored away!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2TYAHt_NFUXx7d2zE7nPB3waLtsELS3pvYvF_iRLfuw4hvFOSGsOpHJefcgs-2UyvD0mkk6FhFjslQg4pX8MGHUbq7i6voJnVBWUhYQi4-JnLwlQavk0ZL4p_YO9nxm-zKOE7ag8Lh9Kt/s1600/scan0001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" eda="true" height="161" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2TYAHt_NFUXx7d2zE7nPB3waLtsELS3pvYvF_iRLfuw4hvFOSGsOpHJefcgs-2UyvD0mkk6FhFjslQg4pX8MGHUbq7i6voJnVBWUhYQi4-JnLwlQavk0ZL4p_YO9nxm-zKOE7ag8Lh9Kt/s320/scan0001.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is the first piece I did. It's on a 6"x12" Arches cold-pressed block. The colossal bloom in the sky is in a perfect location to indicate the low-hanging clouds over the distant hills.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil2AjtmMwrgwmOnAKz5IwBdmQVM8u7fLjKzXcKJBBTIDXJmQAubM-nqEYJum_VD_l0EISVTQlBoaliXiBXf0GB1XhwmeWU71t9bAYHMT4S9THF9iISNXcGbDSf70EZc9S7gvjl8oo4oZ5Y/s1600/scan0002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" eda="true" height="202" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil2AjtmMwrgwmOnAKz5IwBdmQVM8u7fLjKzXcKJBBTIDXJmQAubM-nqEYJum_VD_l0EISVTQlBoaliXiBXf0GB1XhwmeWU71t9bAYHMT4S9THF9iISNXcGbDSf70EZc9S7gvjl8oo4oZ5Y/s320/scan0002.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The second painting was more experimental; I washed on wet-in-wet color, sort of considering the striations in the landscape. Then I went in with a black Micron Pigma pen for some line work. The effect is a little too subtle to be picked up well by my scanner, but it looks very effective in person. I used a 10"x14" Arches cold-pressed block.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCIPWmVIYGeyhqajNuR7JKcwHk2F6EKqaZxBSmkVNI86yyOjzvyPGyht-_N11H8BE1lQIe5zCnnpjJKFlxGy1RBK5AWCX6iqJA1GgardUFTFjJfi3om4r0ZWqbveoTJxhTBOCNzmWKdzOE/s1600/scan0003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" eda="true" height="156" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCIPWmVIYGeyhqajNuR7JKcwHk2F6EKqaZxBSmkVNI86yyOjzvyPGyht-_N11H8BE1lQIe5zCnnpjJKFlxGy1RBK5AWCX6iqJA1GgardUFTFjJfi3om4r0ZWqbveoTJxhTBOCNzmWKdzOE/s320/scan0003.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The last one is again on the 6"x12" block (which is intended for sea and landscapes and is perfect for them!) I used a block Tombo pen. It's watersoluble and I went in and hit the drawing with clear water. The pigment separates as it dries and looks as though other colors have been added, but they weren't. It was fun to try a new technique and I had a great day with the group. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We drove over to Santa Cruz on Friday afternoon and spent the night at our friends Linda and Jim Owens' house. On Saturday morning we got up and drove down to the yacht harbor area, where Linda meets up with a crowd of her fellow ukulele players for what I guess they would call a jam session. (Although how much jamming a ukulele can do is questionable.) While they played. I walked down to the beach and did a couple of pen and ink drawings with washes. I used a Speedball #6 nib and black Speedball ink. I'm just learning to work with the pen-love the varying line weights you can get with it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc9gmEizZRXRxJ9Kc9OZZyvRSkYh-YLxwzrud-bbbNErPvXxEZfF_yEdTdd4sLYyYVk1x1e5-mzVHdih4ZnfImDu5_LetCxwzHLHEPI9XRXzMSsyXWEsq1uihB_lNQLS1Z-ZjSHzSAjbEq/s1600/santa+cruz+plein+air+5+19+12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="124" qba="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc9gmEizZRXRxJ9Kc9OZZyvRSkYh-YLxwzrud-bbbNErPvXxEZfF_yEdTdd4sLYyYVk1x1e5-mzVHdih4ZnfImDu5_LetCxwzHLHEPI9XRXzMSsyXWEsq1uihB_lNQLS1Z-ZjSHzSAjbEq/s320/santa+cruz+plein+air+5+19+12.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is actually the second one I did-there was a race going on and lots of sailboats were out. Too bad they weren't all flying their spinnakers! This was done on a tiny 4" x 10" Arches cold-pressed block.. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkYW-1j4lFVwGmoW2BXUSz7aNnGETmls30qR4ekGXdZbaVTuIOTF62sjwxbOKUkoL061sGEWtqLN-Y_6VwUo_TEU_kYlchyDalokSveebwzsBpQFzJ47Jc-PGIWG6XpIWAvG92ocIE68aw/s1600/scan0003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="196" qba="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkYW-1j4lFVwGmoW2BXUSz7aNnGETmls30qR4ekGXdZbaVTuIOTF62sjwxbOKUkoL061sGEWtqLN-Y_6VwUo_TEU_kYlchyDalokSveebwzsBpQFzJ47Jc-PGIWG6XpIWAvG92ocIE68aw/s320/scan0003.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The scanner didn't pick up the colors as well as it might have-the light house looks better in my original, as does the sky. I used Dick Zunkel's 3 sky colors-colbalt, perm rose, and yellow ochre applied to wet paper for both paintings. Also, in the original the ocean is level-couldn't fit the whole paper in my scanner, so it looks tilted here. This was on a 10" x 14" block. </div>janicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17807292286973130552noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3298240750625012791.post-27125937484695662672012-05-21T23:57:00.002-07:002012-05-22T12:03:34.273-07:00Plein Air at Moss Landing<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Last Thursday, May 17th, 7 of us from SCVWS met at Moss Landing on the ocean. It was a bit cool early in the day, and plenty windy, but we had a great day. There were boats, seascapes, and so much more for us to paint. We went to Phil's for lunch (I had the squid and chips!)Leaders Jenny and Sylvia, plus Brad and I were so happy to be out that we stayed until 4:45. I wore a ponytail and forgot to put sunscreen on my ears-a mistake I will NOT make again! </div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This old boat was the last thing I did-drew it and got a little paint down, but I had to complete it at home. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used a 10" x 14" Arches cold-pressed block.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I used the same block for this piece-there were so many beautiful purples and sage greens in the foliage growing on the dunes. This was done under very adverse condidtions! The wind was blowing like crazy up on the dunes and my stool legs were sinking deeper and deeper as I worked. Working en plein air is not for the easily discouraged!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixKtQ7b2nWd8af1Iuz9CeyBJnFndwcjF5lGUz8A8b_CBX_7AF3JM2qAZyJS2R2SEdmw6u4ZNvVCxCxgposjEvZYFhJzCZ00mq53AHFDKXqk0xTFhdaVslFGVxKQzRGbQpg0RV8Xe0DetX5/s1600/scan0002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="201" kba="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixKtQ7b2nWd8af1Iuz9CeyBJnFndwcjF5lGUz8A8b_CBX_7AF3JM2qAZyJS2R2SEdmw6u4ZNvVCxCxgposjEvZYFhJzCZ00mq53AHFDKXqk0xTFhdaVslFGVxKQzRGbQpg0RV8Xe0DetX5/s320/scan0002.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This is actually the first painting I did in the morning-I edited out many boats and omitted a big building behind the Bay Fresh Seafood shop. There was a roaring diesel motor in the distance part of the time, but when it stopped, I could hear sea lions barking and the cries of the gulls. I used a 6" x 12" Arches cold-pressed block. Used a tan watercolor pencil for the initial drawing on all 3.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We had a a huge turnout-28 people! The only downside was the parking-not many open spots and all of the spaces nearby had a 2 hour limit, so periodically, someone would have to jump up and run to move his or her car! We enjoyed a demo by Dick Zunkel, who uses a pen and ink technique with washes. He uses a Speedball nib in a holder, with black ink. I just used my Faber-Castell Pitt pen this time, but will definitely try out the equipment Dick recommends-loved the varied line weights he achieves with it. <br />
I used an Arches cold-pressed block, 11" x 14". There are a few perspective issues, but I was happy with the first run at it.</div>janicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17807292286973130552noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3298240750625012791.post-89124871226035326142012-04-02T18:20:00.000-07:002012-04-02T18:20:52.423-07:00Plein Air on March 29th<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">It was a beautiful morning after several days of rain and 17 people turned out at the old Agnews site. This was a state mental hospital for many years but when it closed down, 4 of the opriginal buildings were preserved. The clocktower, former director's house and 2 other beautiful old Spanish-style buildings are adorned with intricate brick and tile work on stucco. One of our paintsite leaders, Sylvia remarked that the grounds are almost like an arboretum. <br />

The themes I can use are stars and daisies, so inspiration is hard to come by. Using a photo from a seed catalogue for a reference, I tried to be a little looser than usual and it worked out well. I don't know whether the subtle shading in the petals will be discernable in the scan. Was almost done when I realized I should have been working in portrait format, rather than landscape. I guess the sides will just have to be cropped to make it work. It was done on an Arches 7" x 10" cold press block.</div>janicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17807292286973130552noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3298240750625012791.post-42021870036923443262012-03-12T17:57:00.000-07:002012-06-24T15:28:50.821-07:00Plein Air at Niles Railroad Museum 3/8/12<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

While the museum was closed on Thursday, the SCVWS Plein Air group had a beautiful day for wandering around the grounds and painting. Several of us elected to paint this old caboose. I used a tiny 4" x 10" Arches cold-pressed block and a fine-tipped black Faber Castell Pitt pen. Having the outline of the piece delineated and then breaking through the picture plane with the lamppost was something that just came to me as I began ro draw; I like the effect and wilI use it again sometime. Working with pen and ink and washes seems to yield the best results for me when I paint en plein air. I started a second painting of the old depot building, but it will never again see the light of day!<br />
NOTE: I'm happy to say that this little piece was SOLD in June!</div>janicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17807292286973130552noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3298240750625012791.post-59071004142794685562012-03-07T17:20:00.000-08:002012-03-07T17:20:27.238-08:00More Maui<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div style="text-align: center;">Again, Arches 6"x12" cold-pressed block</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht1GsqlKJlMGjWSS_qdpyN7nWdODsv_QUPxM1wj9TZj7m5brST-MHGZieDnD-4rDrmJsHhBdOKIDygQkCCa-9YdotrCfmwDWRkIVixaH4JfZsj-M4MER6Yef4muDyn1rtYO6bEaGEZszuK/s1600/scan0002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht1GsqlKJlMGjWSS_qdpyN7nWdODsv_QUPxM1wj9TZj7m5brST-MHGZieDnD-4rDrmJsHhBdOKIDygQkCCa-9YdotrCfmwDWRkIVixaH4JfZsj-M4MER6Yef4muDyn1rtYO6bEaGEZszuK/s320/scan0002.jpg" width="157" yda="true" /></a></div>Here's the second piece I did on the trip. I was sitting in pretty much the same spot as the day before, just turned a bit. It was much sunnier this time-not the gray sky of the previous day. I tried scratching some white into the water-not sure if I should have been more agressive with it. </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Several weeks ago I registered for the upcoming SCVWS show, "Red or Red." At the time I only had an idea for a painting in my head; its transition to paper was rocky, to say the least. I'm sorry to say that after working on it for 2 weeks, the patient could not be saved. It was a murky. overworked mess. Three days ago, I hurriedly scrambled to get this piece done. The cards were originally a rubber stamp I had carved; the practice prints turned out beautifully, but the money shot-the one on my painting- looked like a smear of tar on the paper. I had used acrylic paint for the stamp, so there was no way to eradicate the image. I went back in and tried to paint over it to "fix" it with mixed results. Framed, it looks better than I expected, luckily. Moral of the story: don't make up a name; that's what the word "Untitled" is for!</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Be sure to go by the Los Altos Library during the month of February to see 38 other very nice paintings, in addition to mine.</div></div>janicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17807292286973130552noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3298240750625012791.post-87238245563149122872011-12-05T21:04:00.000-08:002011-12-05T21:04:07.655-08:00Plein Air-Santa Cruz<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-lNU6Vb-_g4A1SsOu5dXCcQH4xL2ULriC3JgFwupl0NEOdqpv-9rJN7imIeB-Kwg6jcSf3od3UlBYaw2-VHBzUP2O7tYrS5NKqjfWxV8D0Hng5XPKIErSn_SzCQqIQeUtIW_PWOQTuFME/s1600/Santa+Cruz+Mission+Plaza.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" dda="true" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-lNU6Vb-_g4A1SsOu5dXCcQH4xL2ULriC3JgFwupl0NEOdqpv-9rJN7imIeB-Kwg6jcSf3od3UlBYaw2-VHBzUP2O7tYrS5NKqjfWxV8D0Hng5XPKIErSn_SzCQqIQeUtIW_PWOQTuFME/s320/Santa+Cruz+Mission+Plaza.jpg" width="160" /></a></div>Last Thursday the SCVWS plein air painters braved record-breaking winds at the Mission and Holy Cross Church in Santa Cruz. My first painting of the mission will remain incommunicado, due to a perspective issue. After lunch I did this pen and ink drawing from the church grounds, looking back toward the plaza. I added washes later. It's on a 6" x 14" Arches cold-press block. I used a set of black Faber Castell Pitt pens with 4 different nib sizes. Love the way the redwood foliage turned out. It could use some shadows, though.<br />
We had a good time-the docent let us go into the walled garden to have lunch, which was fortunate or all of the treats we brought to share would have been blown miles away.</div>janicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17807292286973130552noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3298240750625012791.post-28666700896286411872011-11-13T18:16:00.000-08:002011-11-15T10:40:21.818-08:00Plein air at Guadalupe Oaks Park<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">On Thursday the SCVWS Plein Air painters went to Guadalupe Oaks Park-a 63 acre park with lots of beautiful oak trees in the middle of a residential area. There are a couple of surprisingly high hills in the park, which give wonderful vistas of the valley. Mary Paquet even found a spot where she had a view of the downtown SJ skyline. There were 6 of us and we had a great time painting and helping Paint Site Leader Jenny Tero come up with ideas for the quilt she's making that illustrates Beatles songs! I did the first painting below of a cliff face in the old sandstone quarry in my Cachet spiral-bound book, 10" x 7". The cerulean sky granulated way too much, but there were plenty of streaky clouds. By the way, several of the buildings in San Jose's downtown were constructed using sandstone from the quarries in Almaden, including what is now the SJ Museum of Art (originally the post office.) Also, the charming Romanesque Revival Leticia Building on north First Street, which is now occupied by a law firm; the structure dates from 1890. A number of years ago, my dear friend, Eileen Connery, and I organized architectural walking tours of downtown and both of these buildings were on our tour!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixXA3ZTdBo7avPHC2nM1fTyE60H3gI1xwGYeQkGMU9ddivOip9nuEYY7x6HWTMVB1aXO9utGru-wAyZllUItTj2UOAJ_c6eZsVZ1uNHM4HHzWGxfbSoA4xkDj4aarq7pGkK-fbKqN4RAQ-/s1600/scan0001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" nda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixXA3ZTdBo7avPHC2nM1fTyE60H3gI1xwGYeQkGMU9ddivOip9nuEYY7x6HWTMVB1aXO9utGru-wAyZllUItTj2UOAJ_c6eZsVZ1uNHM4HHzWGxfbSoA4xkDj4aarq7pGkK-fbKqN4RAQ-/s320/scan0001.jpg" width="234" /></a></div><div align="left"></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilpXeqTp-nHfLbChnXDhXg2a3dmYVMrVx91gPtLaVnjkEQLUKjXNhSutFaxJycpg711ZL9dbXs_TxP4a5LMqolJVcXi26OD-gjNMM6yu_yc2hwWq94R_-ewV4Cn5lAiba63lCrPntR_Fmc/s1600/scan0002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a>The second is a different quarry view-I did this one on that odd little 4" x 10" Arches cold press block. She has an enormous amount of knowledge about pigments, which was very interesting. In the past, she worked very closely with the Daniel Smith company and she started us out with samples of a few of their paints. She had us use a very limited palette consisting of Ultramarine Turquoise, Quinacridone Sienna, Nickel Azo Yellow, Quinacridone Magenta, and Zoisite(one of Smith's proprietary PrimaTek pigments.) While this is a rather bizarre palette, she wanted us to understand the unique properties of the paints. Above you see my first painting from the workshop-it's from a reference photo I took of kohlrabi that I grew in my garden, laying on an old tarp. This may be my all-time favorite thing I've ever done! It isn't exactly what one might hang in the living room, but I just love the way the colors blended on the paper and the loose, casual look that I labored so hard to achieve!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcfb5sa1v6vLegRcFHQSexAhUZGZv0_WGINnDhdMfETtbtPs60LWR9lmGSkVCLtEMpKHwshviwvP6ZXH3WdI18oYICwM06Hy5IV0shreg7ySh2IhP8vsZ1xVG0uyfNIxdER0LUvd8yE8KR/s1600/IMG_5645.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" ida="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcfb5sa1v6vLegRcFHQSexAhUZGZv0_WGINnDhdMfETtbtPs60LWR9lmGSkVCLtEMpKHwshviwvP6ZXH3WdI18oYICwM06Hy5IV0shreg7ySh2IhP8vsZ1xVG0uyfNIxdER0LUvd8yE8KR/s320/IMG_5645.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
My second piece was a vase of peonies that I have painted before (and posted a couple of months ago.) The soft cloth in the background gives it a surreal look. I used the same palette as above, plus Permanent Rose. I like the way the peonies turned out, but I'm back to my ususal controlled style. I still want to do these again. By the way, I used quarter sheets of Arches cold press for all of these.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQtuELO-rnhffFMNPoe6oEQ0kzb1KO5_8KsZnBqW83BfdcgLuEki3a_G2sCSRxcQu9LZ3RLrlfz9CahwFAxYyj2wv9h-KO8b8ALaCSqAXL8LejyUqaEd7JCeZ9qrP2ZYBRxphNtiy-iPkD/s1600/IMG_5646.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" ida="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQtuELO-rnhffFMNPoe6oEQ0kzb1KO5_8KsZnBqW83BfdcgLuEki3a_G2sCSRxcQu9LZ3RLrlfz9CahwFAxYyj2wv9h-KO8b8ALaCSqAXL8LejyUqaEd7JCeZ9qrP2ZYBRxphNtiy-iPkD/s320/IMG_5646.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
All was not rosy in the workshop-I tackled a beautiful landscape photo of a vineyard that our friend Erick took a few years ago. This time I used the same palette with the most unfortunate addition of Cadmium Red (WHY??? I've always hated this pigment!) On the last day of the workshop, Jan took on the challenge of "saving" a couple of paintings people had despaired of fixing, including this one. Even she couldn't salvage this overworked disaster! She added all sorts of colors but it was too late. RIP, vineyard.<br />
<br />
There's a 4th painting I still have to complete-may post it at a later date.<br />

Although it's a somewhat dodgy part of town and is bordered by a very busy freeway, the grounds are very well-kept. There are still a few Portuguese businesses nearby. The building's two tall bell towers can be seen from some distance and make the church a real landmark. The adjacent rectory is surrrounded by a beautiful border of rose bushes that are in full bloom. The Plein Air group from SCVWS had a good turnout-about 10 of us. It was a very breezy, cool day and the clouds came and went, changing our shadows minute by minute. I did this in a Cachet watercoolor sketchbook with a black pen and washes.janicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17807292286973130552noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3298240750625012791.post-63416549860628927292011-07-13T20:52:00.000-07:002011-07-13T20:52:32.126-07:00Peonies<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbldMCllbjECHxrQRgoGA3ENEM9DqD06-YBasDDo9iEINiD7SzEUXJ7OB9ZQKZ3xbIdt4aNagiCsuwhTltRV3QN6WkSs9lX7Va5NRS7OY3IQYyUPt66-srS_3ka2XBoxKRWtdWAjzfUCnj/s1600/peonies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="201" m$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbldMCllbjECHxrQRgoGA3ENEM9DqD06-YBasDDo9iEINiD7SzEUXJ7OB9ZQKZ3xbIdt4aNagiCsuwhTltRV3QN6WkSs9lX7Va5NRS7OY3IQYyUPt66-srS_3ka2XBoxKRWtdWAjzfUCnj/s320/peonies.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>I bought a bunch of beautifully fragrant peonies at Trader Joe's and they inspired me to draw and paint them. The clear glass vase I put them in somehow got way too dark-I'll try this again and keep the vase under control-I hope! Luckily we were in the shade on a trail alongside a creek, so we didn't mind the heat too much. The creek is full of boulders and is edged with rocks and cliffs covered with beautiful very thick soft green moss. There were lots of small rapids and waterfalls. The only downside was the presence of biting mosquitoes. Note to self: buy Off insect repellent wipes before the next trip to the woods! <br />
Instead of taking along my trusty travel palette, I experimented with various media; did all of them in a 7"x10" Daler-Rowney Cachet watercolor spiral-bound book. We only had about 20 minutes at each site.<br />

There are ponds, all sorts of flowering shrubs, mature trees, marshes and lots of wildlife. There was a paint-worthy scene at every turn! I negative-painted the trunk and branches of this huge sycamore tree that dominated a small island in the largest of the ponds. I used a 9 x 12 block. Painting en plein air continues to be a challenge, but it is such fun to be outdoors and sharing the experience with the wonderful people who are part of this organization.</div>janicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17807292286973130552noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3298240750625012791.post-21223668472555526202011-05-31T18:23:00.000-07:002011-05-31T18:25:56.849-07:00Yosemite-Plein Air Painting<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZDxBfTO25RfE7Q55heOTfrCjn-orRsZtT-IudzHAQh9C9O2sz1NI_pS9xYzt1nzfn9yefGa0t_4n0AWOVdGavMUxgO498SawBoi5n7kMUSZ1H28mmJZZfpvaTwXb4sj0P-Y6wj28qfBDK/s1600/scan0006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZDxBfTO25RfE7Q55heOTfrCjn-orRsZtT-IudzHAQh9C9O2sz1NI_pS9xYzt1nzfn9yefGa0t_4n0AWOVdGavMUxgO498SawBoi5n7kMUSZ1H28mmJZZfpvaTwXb4sj0P-Y6wj28qfBDK/s320/scan0006.jpg" t8="true" width="213" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">While David and our friends, Erick and Melinda, went on a hike to Mirror Lake, I sat by the shops and cafes at Curry Village and painted the nearby cliffs and falls.
